Campers will also participate in a typical firefighter workout.Interim SDFD Chief Kevin Ester said youth programs such as the camp are vital.“The kids will learn valuable skills and get a glimpse of what firefighters do. The organizers of GEC have done an outstanding job putting together fun and meaningful activities for the campers,” he said.Participants arrived at 7 a.m. to receive their safety gear and engine company assignments. Campers rotated between various activities throughout the day, and Mayor Kevin Faulconer visited at 12:30 p.m.The camp is organized and run by firefighters from SDFD and the Los Angeles, Poway, San Jose, Federal, Chula Vista and Tijuana fire departments. It was created after the Los Angeles Fire Department hosted two female SDFD firefighters at their own event.Another camp takes place in May. last_img
