Four held for extortion from vehicles posing as police officers

first_imgKolkata: Barrackpore police has arrested four persons from Belghoria Express Way on Tuesday night for extorting money from vehicles posing as police officers.The accused have been identified as Subhankar Das, Utpal Mondal, Partha Poddar and Abhijit Ghosh. Police have seized some fake ID cards and uniforms from them. Cops said they used to extort money from people and vehicles claiming themselves to be police officers. One of the accused used to claim himself as an IPS officer. Following specific information, a team of officers from Barrackpore raided a spot on Belghoria Express Way on late Tuesday night, where the accused gathered to Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeextort money. They were detained by the police officers and were later brought to the police station for interrogation following which they were arrested. They produced fake ID cards during police interrogation. The fake IPS officer and others used to live in different places of North 24-Parganas. Barrackpore police had received several complaints against the accused based on which police started an investigation. They used to stop vehicles and demand money. They would not, however, stay at the same place for a long time to evade arrest. On Tuesday night, police came to know that the accused were stopping vehicles on the Express Way and rushed to the spot. They also seized a car that the accused used. Police said the accused used to introduce themselves as senior police officers and extort money from people. The accused used to threaten people saying they would face dire consequences if their demands for money were not met. During the investigation, police came to know that the accused had been harassing people for quite sometime. Police are investigating if other people are involved in the incident. A detailed probe has been initiated in this regard.last_img
