first_imgHaiti experiencing decline in cholera cases The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) says the number of suspected cholera cases reported in Haiti, up to April 8, 2017, has decreased when compared to the same periods in 2015 and 2016.In its latest report, PAHO says to date 4,871 suspected cholera cases have been reported in Haiti, including 69 deaths. This represents a 60 and 61 per cent decrease compared to the 12,373 and 12,226 suspected cholera cases reported during the same period in 2015 and 2016, respectively.Additionally, the 69 deaths reported so far this year represents a 41 per cent and 50 per cent decrease when compared to the 116 and 139 deaths reported during the same period in 2015 and 2016, respectively.All 10 departments in the country Haiti have reported suspected cholera cases this year.The five departments with the highest rates in descending order are: Centre, Ouest (which includes the capital city of Port-au-Prince), Nippes, Artibonite, and Nord.Since the cholera outbreak began in October 2010, 800,665 cases have been reported, including 9,480 deaths.According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the cholera epidemic in Haiti continues to be the largest in the Western Hemispherelast_img read more

The Jamaicans won all three games in a four-team final Caribbean zone group in St Kitts and Nevis.The Jamaicans beat the Dominican Republic 1-0 before beating Haiti by the same margin on Friday to secure their position in the CONCACAF Championship.On the qualification competition’s final day last Sunday, the Reggae Girlz celebrated their entry into the CONCACAF Championship, with a 9-0 win over the hosts.Early preparations“We will try to get a camp and also a game or two ahead of the CONCACAF championships. We want to get to Trinidad and Tobago early. The JFF will be working with us to make it possible,” said young Reggae Girlz head coach, Lorne Donaldson.The team that will play in the CONCACAF Championship will also include a few additions with Donaldson saying he would be looking for players to boost the squad.Ensuring squad is at its bestThat squad will have to be at its best because it will now have to contend with a group that includes, the United States, Mexico, and Nicaragua.Jamaica will play Mexico on Friday, January 19, 2018, to kick off their championship, before playing against the United States on Sunday, January 21.The final game of what is a tough group will be played against Nicaragua on Tuesday, January 23.The top two teams from each group will play in a semi-final scheduled for January 26. The third-place match and final will be played on Sunday, January 28.The top three teams from the CONCACAF U20 Championship qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in France.Caribbean representatives The Caribbean will be represented in the Championship by Jamaica, Haiti, and hosts Trinidad and Tobago.The Jamaicans will also have an eye on the 2018 Central American and Caribbean games in Colombia, for which they have also qualified. Trinidadian academic and activist Rhoda Reddock elected to UN committee

first_imgEminent scholar and activist Professor Rhoda Reddock has been elected as a member of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).First timeA statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Reddock will serve for the period, 2019-2022, and “this is the first time since becoming a party to the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women in 1990 that Trinidad and Tobago has presented a candidate to CEDAW.Reddock was one 16 candidates competing for the 12 vacancies on the Committee. She was elected on Thursday during balloting at the United Nations securing 158 out of 185 votes – the highest number of votes received among the candidates.The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said as a member of the Committee, Reddock, who served as deputy principal of the St. Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), will join 22 other independent experts in monitoring the progress made by States in the implementation of the Convention.It said the Committee represents one of the foremost mechanisms worldwide for the promotion of human rights and fair treatment of women as it assists State Parties in improving their human rights record and providing women and girls with equal access to opportunities for growth and development.last_img read more

Who Shot XXXTentacion?

first_imgThe Broward County Sheriff’s Department is offering a reward of up to $3,000 for anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the killer or killers of South Florida-born, Jamaican-American rapper, XXXTentacion.The Plantation-born, Lauderhill, Florida-raised rapper, born Jahseh Onfroy, was leaving RIVA Motorsports in Deerfield Beach shortly before 4 p.m. on Monday, June 18, 2018, when he was approached by two armed suspects in an apparent robbery, the Broward County Sheriff’s Department said.At least one of the suspects fired a gun striking Onfroy. Both of the suspects fled in a dark-color SUV.  The rapper was transported to Broward Health North where he was pronounced dead.Investigators continued Thursday to investigate the broad daylight killing of the 20-year-old Onfroy. Anonymous tips that lead to an arrest are eligible for the reward.Detectives are reportedly getting a “ton of social media posts” sent in by citizens who believe they have legitimate leads on the suspects in the XXX murder.Suspicious Facebook postOne major lead reportedly being scrutinized is a Facebook post by a rapper from Georgia, who posted at 12:56 PM on Sunday, that “xxxTentacion gone get shot tomorrow.”Another post shows a separate crew posing in front of what appears to be a gas station shortly after XXXTentacion died. The three men appear to be standing in front of a black SUV, similar to the one described as the suspect’s vehicle. However, after that photo went public and the men were identified by fans online, one of the guys posted a video denying his involvement in XXXTentacion’s death.  It’s unclear if he’s been contacted by police to date.Jamaican parentsOnfroy, according to News Americas reports, was born to Jamaican parents Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy and Cleopatra Bernard. He has three siblings with one being half shared paternally. Onfroy was mainly raised by his grandmother, Collette Jones in Pompano Beach, Florida and Lauderhill, Florida.The young rapper rose to fame while posting raps online from his bedroom on the audio distribution platform SoundCloud in June 2013. Onfroy released his debut album, 17, on August 25, 2017. This March, he released his second album. His singles “Sad!” and “Changes” recently peaked at 7 and 37, respectively the Billboard Hot 100.His interest in music initially started after his aunt persuaded him to begin attending school choir and later church choir. In 2013 he launched his musical career, inspired by both rock and rap.Legal problems XXXTenatcion has, however, made headlines not only for his  music successes but also for a string of legal problems stemming from a 2016 domestic violence arrest.The rapper, accused of beating his pregnant girlfriend, was slapped with 15 new felony charges in December, including witness tampering and witness harassment.Prosecutors reportedly believe the rapper – by way of recorded calls he made in jail – attempted to coerce his girlfriend into dropping her case against him.He served a brief stint in jail in December before he was released on house arrest.
